The MikroTik Cloud Hosted Router CHR is specifically designed for virtualized environments but require periodic license renewal through the MikroTik account server, which can be problematic without internet access. In an isolated network environment without internet access, using virtual RouterBoards instead of physical MikroTik hardware routers can be a viable option. And yeah they run super easily in EVE, GNS3, or virtual box, VMware etc, and very efficient so you can simulate huge networks (and so yeah not required to buy their hardware, mini PC and buy the CHR license etc). Is it possible to use the classic x86 ROS version with the appropiate license in a virtualized environment, or are there any flaws, that I have to be aware of? Pretty hard to find anything that beats them for features to price as you said. Is there a CHR "offline activation and runs forever" license? That's a problem, if there is no internet access :-/ But after consuming the licensing information from, there is a problem with CHR licenses: "A running CHR instance will indicate the time when it has to access the account server to renew it's license." The plan is, to use this servers to install some Routerboards, instead of using Mikrotik Hardware Routers.Īt first sight the CHR should be the best choice, because it's build to run virtualized. There is a isolated network (no Internet access) with VMWare ESXi servers.
